Situated in the West side of Romania it has as natural borders the Mures and the Tisa rivers, the Danube river and the Banat Mountains. Beside the fact that it is an economic force because of its geographical location, Banat is a region rich in history, where castles, museums and warship places can be visited, thereof we mention the Baroc Palace from Timisoara, “Saraca” Monastery from Semlacul Mic village etc.
Timis County is the westernmost and the widest county of Romania having as its residence Timisoara city, the largest city in Banat, and the 4th in the country, being certified since the 13th century as the “Castrum Timissiensis” fortified city. Talking about old times, Timisoara or the “Little Vienna” how it is called became in 1884 the first city of Europe with electrical street illumination, and still here, in 1869 people could enjoy a ride with the first horse tramcar. In Timisoara you can also visit Huniade Castle (1443-1447), the oldest city’s building, hosting today the Museum of Banat; moreover you can visit the old City Hall, the Roman-Catholic Dom, Count Mercy Palace. The metallic bridge designed by engineer Eiffel or the Rose’s Park are other beautiful sights of this beautiful “garden city”. We also must mention the fact that in 1989, the people from Timisoara set the light of the revolution against the communist system, Timisoara becoming the “martyr city”.
To complete the historic significance of Timisoara city as well as of its plentiful cultural life, Banat is a big tourist attraction also because of its diversified relief. So, here we meet the Timis Plain with the Timis River, the Nerei Canyons, the Poiana Rusca Mountains with many caves (the “Romanesti” Cave with the Bats Chamber being the most significant one), mineral and thermal water springs which gave birth to spa resorts as it would be Buzias or Herculane which are situated on top of the oldest spa resorts in the world.
