Accommodation Maramures

Maramures, the magic land of the Romanian Carpathians, is located in the Northern part of the country, and it extends on the territory of Maramures and Satu Mare counties. The cultural patrimony of Maramures is well kept in museums such as the Village Museum of Sighetu Marmatiei where there are on display houses, folk vestments and folk art; the Ethnography and Folk Art Museum of Baia Mare etc.

The mastery of the folk dabs from this area, famous for the wood carving is rediscovered in the Maramures gate a symbol of this fairyland but also in many churches built entirely of wood which date from the 17th and 18th centuries. Many of them are inscribed in the World Patrimony lists of UNESCO thereof we mention: the Church from Budesti (1643), the Church from Surdeti (1721) - the tallest wooden church from Europe (72m), the Church from Ieud (1638) which is the oldest church in Maramures etc. Besides wood crafting, the people of these places take pride in other skills as it would be pottery art, straw hats and fur and skin masks manufacturing which are being brought to light on Christmas and New Year’ Eve. Women excel in making folk costumes, traditional adornments, vestments, carpets, rugs, knapsacks and others, all these in strong and contrasting colors and signalling the desire to live fully and the beautiful livelihood of this people.

A place that will deeply impress you, Cimitirul Vesel (Merry Cemetery) of Sapanta is a favorite attraction for the Romanian tourists and for foreigners, too. Do not forget to take a ride with the “Mocanita” train on the Vaserului Valley - a local train that runs on a railway with narrow gauge and it represents a real attraction of the area.

Beside the glamour of the architecture and folk traditions, Maramures is rejoicing in having a unique landscape with many forms of relief and natural reservations: the Pietrosu Mare Natural reservation, the “Creasta Cocosului” (Cock’s Comb) Geological Reservation, Spelaeology Reservation – the “Pestera cu oase” (Bones) Cave and the Valenii Somcutei Cave. It is also worth seeing the Babei Keys, the Tartar’s Defile, the Morarenilor (Millers’s) Lake, the Blue Spring of Iza with the source and the cave long of 2500 m etc. The resorts Suisor, Izvoare, Borsa, Cavnic, Mogosa and Ocna Sugatag are ideal destinations to spend your holidays, where in the cold season the tourist can practise winter sports on any of the many ski slopes.

Whichever your destination might be on this “land of flowers” as an old folk song says, you can not leave the “Country of Maramures” hungry, so we invite you to taste the traditional “balmos” made of “mamaliga” (cornflour polenta) cheese and milk, but before that you have to drink a shot of “horinca from maramu” (strong alcoholic drink) so the host can have a good year all along.
